How much does a fence cost per foot?
Installed fence around Seneca runs from $5–10 a foot for woven wire field fence up to $36–50 a foot for a 5 ft aluminum pool fence. A 6 ft wood privacy fence runs $22–34 a foot.
Every price here is per linear foot, installed: materials, posts and labor, with concrete where the posts are set in it. They are Upstate averages gathered in October 2026, and they are shown as ranges because no two fence lines are the same.
| Fence | Height | Installed |
|---|---|---|
| Wood privacy | 6 ft | $22–34 a foot |
| Wood picket | 4 ft | $16–26 a foot |
| Chain link, galvanized | 4 ft | $13–19 a foot |
| Chain link, black coated | 4 ft | $16–23 a foot |
| Aluminum | 4 ft | $30–42 a foot |
| Aluminum pool fence | 5 ft | $36–50 a foot |
| Vinyl privacy | 6 ft | $30–44 a foot |
| Board fence, 3 or 4 board | 4 to 5 ft | $12–22 a foot |
| Field fence, woven wire | 4 ft | $5–10 a foot |
Where a job lands inside its range depends on the line itself, which the last section of this guide covers. If you are still choosing a material, wood, vinyl and aluminum compared sets the three side by side on price, life and upkeep.
What do gates cost?
Gates are priced on their own, by the fence they hang in. A wood walk gate runs $300–550, and a wood drive gate runs $650–1,100.
| Gate for | Walk gate | Drive gate |
|---|---|---|
| Wood privacy or picket | $300–550 | $650–1,100 |
| Chain link | $180–400 | $400–900 |
| Aluminum or vinyl | $350–700 | $900–1,700 |
| Aluminum pool fence | $550–1,000 | $900–1,700 |
| Board or field fence | $250–450 | $400–750 |
Pool gates cost the most because they carry self-closing, self-latching hardware, which South Carolina’s pool code calls for. Size each gate for what has to pass through it. A walk gate suits people, a wheelbarrow and a push mower. A drive gate suits a truck, a trailer, a riding mower or a tractor.
Is there a job minimum?
Yes. Our job minimum is $1,200, whatever the length, because a short job still takes a crew, the truck and the auger for a day.
It mostly touches small jobs: a dog run, a short section between the house and a garage, or a single run across a side yard. The estimator tells you when the minimum is what sets your price. Other companies handle short jobs in other ways. Some set a minimum length, such as 100 feet, and some charge a full crew day for anything under 300 feet.
What does a typical job cost?
A typical back yard here takes 150 to 200 feet of fence. At 150 feet, a 6 ft wood privacy fence with one walk gate comes to $3,600–$5,650.
Here are four common jobs, priced the way the estimator prices them: open, level ground and no old fence to take out first.
| The job | Ballpark |
|---|---|
| 150 ft of 6 ft wood privacy, one walk gate | $3,600–$5,650 |
| 200 ft of 4 ft galvanized chain link, one walk gate and one drive gate | $3,200–$5,100 |
| 120 ft of 5 ft aluminum pool fence, one gate | $4,850–$7,000 |
| 600 ft of 4 ft woven wire field fence, one drive gate | $3,400–$6,750 |
These are ballparks, not quotes. Add $3–5 a foot if an old fence has to come out first, and allow more for a sloped or rocky line.
What moves the price up or down?
Height, slope, digging, corners, gates, access and removal. Permits and surveys, where you need them, are costs on top of the fence itself.
- Height. Cost guides put a 4 ft fence at about 80 percent of the price of the same fence at 6 ft, and an 8 ft fence at 25 to 50 percent more.
- Slope. Cost guides add about 10 percent for a slight slope, 25 percent for a moderate one and up to 50 percent where a steep yard means stepping every section.
- Rock, red clay and roots. Much of the Upstate sits on Cecil soils, which have a red clay subsoil. Cost guides say rock, hard clay or big roots can add 15 to 40 percent to the digging.
- Corners, ends and short runs. Every corner and end post takes extra work, so a line with many turns costs more per foot than one long straight run.
- Gates. Priced on their own, as in the table above.
- Access. If a truck and auger can’t reach the line and materials have to be carried in by hand, labor goes up.
- Removal. Taking down an old fence and hauling it away runs $3–5 a foot, and more where old posts sit in heavy concrete.
- Permits and surveys. Cost guides put a fence permit at about $25 to $150 and a boundary survey at about $200 to $1,000, paid to the office or the surveyor.
Which towns ask for a permit, and what each one allows, is in fence permits and rules, town by town.
How do I price my own yard?
Measure the line, count the gates and enter both in the fence cost estimator. It uses the same prices as this page, with boxes for an old fence and a sloped or rocky line.
How to measure your yard for a fence walks through it run by run, with a worked example and a post count. Before a layout is final, we check the town, county, HOA and lake rules that apply to your lot, and when the fence is done we walk the finished line with you. Each of the fences we build has its own page, with what goes into it.
